Jinwei Zhang (B.1989, China). The artist began studying the violin at the age of eight and attended Nanyang Junior College in Singapore (1999) and Ashfield College in Nottinghamshire, England (2002). He then entered the I. Repin St. Petersburg State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (2008-2016).
After graduating from the Academy, he started exploring contemporary art. His first solo exhibition, "Eschatological Fugue," took place at Station hall, Cultural Quarter "Brusnitsyn," St. Petersburg (2022). In 2023, he moved to Europe and currently resides and works in Budapest Hungary.
The experience of studying violin and classical painting in Russia sets the vectors in Jinwei's practice while also defining boundaries.
In search of new artistic tools, the artist turned to philosophy, archaeology, mythology, and biology. The living world, its matter, and the essence of objects always remain the focus of his interest.
Similar to how humans attribute qualities to nature and find meaning in their existence, Jinwei assigns "tasks" to his materials to reveal their essence. The artist distinguishes between invention and discovery, favoring a pre-scientific sensory approach. His goal is to uncover or imagine the purpose of things and to connect reality and fantasy, the present and the probable, the living and the dead.
For Jinwei, context is a road sign indicating direction. By shaping materials, he highlights how familiar objects lose their recognizability. Form, for him, lacks definite outlines and is open to interpretations as a source of movement and new knowledge.
